Hindsight is 20/20, but if this past year left us with any nuggets of wisdom, it’s that a thriving nonprofit can truly weather any storm. Below are tips and tools I’m recommending to my current clients as we plan for the year ahead.

No. 1: Attend to your team

It can’t be overstated enough: your team needs your leadership now, more than ever. Nurture and strengthen staff morale to ensure your team has the capacity to adapt and respond to the continued uncertainty that awaits us in 2021.

No. 2: Buckle up for the long-haul

As a leader, embrace the hard-won lessons of 2020 by preparing for possible futures over the next 12-18 months. Check out this report from Deloitte on scenario-planning for nonprofits.

Beyond Great: While written for private sector leaders, the six key areas for delivering total stakeholder impact have the potential to strengthen nonprofit organizational durability and impact for years to come.

Those six key areas are:

  • economic value: which can be translated to financial health
  • consumer well-being: which can be translated to client well-being
  • ethical values and principles
  • environmental sustainability
  • social enablement
  • governance

In which of these six key areas do you feel your organization is thriving and which areas could use some TLC?
